LEADERSHIP

Rather than making claims about how effective a leader I am, I quote from a recommendation received from one of the therapists who used to work with me: "Eric brought a wealth of knowledge and decisive judgment to his Director role… I will always remember how he made staff feel appreciated, encouraged, focused, motivated, respected and valued during each encounter."

COLLABORATION

I prefer to think that I work with the staff, not that they work for me.  I make sure they understand not only what is expected of them but why.  Knowing this, they can bring their own unique experience and education to the problem, take ownership of their work, and with that comes pride in the outcome. At the end of the day, the result is far more important than who can take credit for it.  And, if the staff are happy it follows that the clients will also be happy.

DIVERSITY

I believe that everyone -- whether they are a client or an employee -- deserves respect. Respect takes many forms. It may be as simple as providing clients with documents in their native language or referring them to a staff member who can speak to them in the language in which they are most comfortable.  Or, it can take the form of recognizing and accommodating the special requirements that a staff member has because of cultural or religious beliefs. By making these small adjustments, you can create a treatment environment more likely to yield positive results and a work environment more conducive to success.

COMPLIANCE

As an attorney, I was trained to read and interpret statutes, rules and regulations.  This ability informs the policies and procedures that I put in place, which ensure that regulatory and fiscal audits are manageable, and that the outcomes satisfy the auditors and the Board of Directors.  It also provides a stable work environment that takes the guesswork out of what is expected of the staff, freeing them up to do their jobs.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

No business operates in a vacuum.  Whether it is with government regulators or with others in the community that provide the same, similar or coordinating services, I believe it is essential to establish strategic partnerships to ensure that the best possible results can be attained.  Working well with multiple stakeholders -- internal and external -- is likewise crucial to the success of any enterprise.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The single biggest asset a corporation has is its Board of Directors. The Board's combined knowledge and experience is invaluable, and enables the CEO to brainstorm with them to solve problems and create and pursue options for growth.  In the same way that a good leader works with his staff, a smart leader collaborates with his Board of Directors, since the only thing that matters is the success of the corporation.  In my opinion, ego is an anathema to success.
